Good news for whale lovers! The annual gray whale migration is off to an early start and San Diego is the perfect spot to see them as they make their 10,000 mile journey from the Arctic to their birthing grounds in the Sea of Cortez.
One great place to see the whales is Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma. We can’t wait to make our way to Cabrillo to see these bathing beauties in person! more details via signonsandiego

We couldn’t be more thrilled to spread the word about the exciting changes to come at Rancho Valencia in 2012. A new adventure has begun: a six month, $30 million property renovation.
Rancho Valencia will remain in keeping with its old-world charm and character that friends and guests have fallen in love with over the past 22 years. “With the renovation of Rancho Valencia, we’re committed to bringing renewed energy into this beloved Southern California getaway and continuing the tradition of providing the gracious personalized service and exclusive experiences that guests of Rancho Valencia have come to know and cherish,” said Jeff Jacobs, one of Rancho Valencia’s owners. “It is our intent to build upon the resort’s unique charm, character and authenticity while maintaining its original architectural integrity.”
Re-opening September 7, 2012, Rancho Valencia will include enhanced fitness offerings, incorporating a new yoga pavilion and Pilates studio, as well as expanded workout facilities. A fresh, new resort clubhouse, restaurant, brasserie and bar, event space, an enhanced tennis center, as well as revitalized guest casitas, will also be a part of the makeover. During the remodel, tennis facilities will be open and limited fitness classes will be offered; however the remainder of the resort is closed.
We are so very excited about Rancho Valencia’s new chapter and we can’t wait to share more with you. Stay tuned!
“With the $20 million renovation planned for Rancho Valencia, chef Eric Bauer will have a new rustic-chic setting to showcase his garden-to-table talents. In addition, a new casual cantina bar will serve up tapas and seductive sippers.”—San Diego Magazine, January 2012 (click to view) //ANN WYCOFF
The polls are open for Travel + Leisure’s 2012 World’s Best List and we are thrilled to be listed among the nominees. Have a little (or a lot!) of love for Rancho Valencia? We would be oh, so delighted if you would share it with the world.
Chilly winter days call for a little extra skin love. Stay radiant and gorgeous with these tips from Rancho Valencia Spa Director and resident Glow Guru, Stephanie Baxter.
One of the best gifts you can give your skin during the colder months is hydration. Helping skin to shed dead skin cells with an exfoliant is one key to keeping skin happy. One way to do this is with a chemical exfoliant, like a glycolic wash or a moisturizer with Glycolic or Salicylic acid. Another great way to shed dead skin cells to reveal fresh skin underneath is a manual face scrub. Do be gentle…use lots of water with gentle circular movements. Around 30 seconds should be plenty.
One of our favorite face polishes new to the Spa, is the Amala Hydrating Face Polish. This gentle formulation is both nourishing and softening, thanks to the addition of skin-friendly jasmine.
As the weather turns colder and the sun sets earlier, our guests seek to try a wider array of red wine. From the lightest of Pinot Noirs to dark unctuous Cabernet Sauvignon, we live in a time of unprecedented quality and choice. Our talented Sommelier, Jayson Knack, shares a few of his current favorites from our collection at Rancho Valencia, in order of intensity.
Sineann Pinot Noir Oregon 2009 / $55 While the interest in Oregon Pinot Noir seems to reach new levels each year, it is increasingly difficult to source wine that displays varietal character at a reasonable price. The Sineann exhibits a surprisingly balance of red fruits and forest floor. Great acidity and clean, accurate flavors make this wine a fantastic pairing with salmon or light poultry dishes.
Medusa Cannonau di Sardenia Grenache Sardina / $40 I can’t seem to avoid recommending wines from small, unique and off-the-map places. I find that if you are willing to experiment and take a risk, many times you will be rewarded with outstanding performance for the dollar. This wine is 100% Grenache and strikes you as rich, meaty and wild. Lighter in tannins, this would be perfectly paired with pork or game meats. You simply will not believe how good this wine is and how few people have tried it.
Saint Helena Road Vineyards Roy J Maier Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, California, Sonoma County Mountains / $62 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 2% Malbec, 2% Cab Franc. I have had great success introducing this wine to people year after year. This mountain grown Cabernet has a structure that has, over time become silky smooth. Flavors of cassis and graphite lead to a powerful, rich finish. A ridiculous value considering that many Cabernets fetch over $100 per bottle for this quality. Pair with any beef that has been grilled or barbequed.
